Understand what open transport does well
Open multi-vehicle carriers move much of the market. They provide broad route coverage and commonly lower pricing. Vehicles remain exposed to weather, dust, and ordinary road environment, much as they would while being driven, although they are not accumulating driven mileage.
For a daily-use vehicle with ordinary clearance and no unusual finish sensitivity, open service is often the practical baseline.
Identify the consequence enclosed service reduces
Enclosed equipment shields the vehicle from most road and weather exposure. Some carriers offer liftgate loading or other features suited to low-clearance, nonstandard, rare, restored, or high-value vehicles. Availability can be lower and price higher.
- Consider paint, soft tops, exposed components, and irreplaceable trim.
- Consider ground clearance and the loading angle, not only market value.
- Ask about the exact trailer and loading method assigned.
- Review insurance documentation and exclusions for the actual carrier.

Use repairability as the decision test
A high-value vehicle with readily available parts may create a different risk than a lower-value vehicle with rare paint, trim, or historical significance. Think about how difficult a repair would be, how precisely condition must be preserved, and whether the vehicle can tolerate ordinary exposure.
The inspection record remains essential with either equipment type. Enclosed service changes exposure; it does not eliminate the need for photographs, contract review, and a careful delivery inspection.
Request both prices with identical assumptions
Ask for open and enclosed options using the same vehicle, condition, dates, and route. Confirm whether timing differs due to equipment availability. The price difference then represents the protection and handling difference rather than unrelated scope changes.
Choose the least expensive service that responsibly manages the consequence you care about. That may be open for a family SUV and enclosed for a low-clearance restoration on the same household move.
